Grid[z] is a Facebook Flash game developed by Edgar Miranda (Flash) and Parris Khachi (PHP).

Grid[z]: Your Turn!

Grid[z] is a two-player game in which players try to place as many of their pieces on the board before running out of moves. Players gain and lose points for winning and losing games, and are ranked globally by these points.
The game features good integration with Facebook and original graphics. It is published and fully playable, but still has minor bugs and is being developed.

Operation Flytrap

Operation Flytrap by Kristopher Windsor tied for second place in the Tower Defense Challenge. It is written in FreeBasic.

Awesome, huh?

Ridiculous, huh?

In this game, creeps can fly over towers, but not over trees, which the user can reposition. The creeps get smart this time, going out of the way to avoid towers.
The game features several levels, creeps, towers, difficulty levels, and sound effects. The game is complete and fully playable.
Graphics, sound effects, and music were provided by third parties (see the readme file).

Tower of Mediocrity

Tower of Mediocrity, by Christopher Nelson, was developed for the Tower Defense Challenge. It is written in C++ with ncurses and SDL.



In this game, creeps follow through a pre-set maze from the top of the screen to the bottom. The player places towers which autonomously shoot toward the center line of the maze. The major twist is that your funds also serve as your life.
The game features multiple types of enemies, waves, towers, and maps, as well as music. The game is complete and fully playable.
Graphics and fonts of the SDL version are provided under the GPLv2 and the music is public domain.

Tower Defense Challenge (Rules)

Thanks for everyone who participated in the last challenge. We will post the video of the winners soon! In the mean time, here are the rules for the newest challenge!

Tower Defense:

- At least one map

- At least 3 Tower types

- At least 5 waves of creeps

- It may be developed for any platform

Prizes will be announced on the day of; however, please remember how awesome the prizes were last time :)! Plus you will be praised in the Game Dev and CS club for your awesomeness.

This may be judged by a vote or by a panel (not sure yet, Edgar and I both want to participate)

Grading Criteria:

- Mechanics

- Game Play

- Graphics/Audio

- Polish

Tentative Deadline: Monday, April 27th, 2009 at 5:00pm ( a little more than a month from now )

We will also have a speaker on that day! ( will be announced and confirmed soon )

The Shmup of Death

The Shmup of Death by Alex Kerr (design) and Kristopher Windsor (programming) won first place in the Shmup Challenge. It is written in FreeBasic.


Not dead yet.

This is a simple, keyboard-controlled game of missile avoidance; there are no bonuses.
Despite the fact that the player's ship is a solid green rectangle, this game has decent gameplay and requires quick button pressing. There are a few types of enemies, including a boss, who fires multiple missile patterns. The game plays increasingly hard levels until the player has died. The game is complete and fully playable.
Sound effects and music were provided by third parties (see the readme file).

AMD Tech Talk and Shmup Challenge Presentations

Hi Everyone,

The shmup challenge ends on monday. We will be presenting on Monday, March 16th at 5:00pm. Meet at the Computer Science Club MH 227 on Campus. Make sure to bring your laptops and the game. We will tell you the format of the presentation at the event. We are thinking winner may be decided by vote!

The winner will be announced at the AMD Tech Talk at 6:30pm. Prizes will be give out them.

Prizes will include gift cards and a copy of Halo Wars for Xbox 360! (Care of Mircosoft).
THERE WILL BE FOOD AT THE TECH TALK. Details on the flyer below! See you all on Monday!

Shmup Challenge (Rules)

Hi Everyone,

This was a little later than anticipated; however, here are the rules for the shmup! Once again you may use any technology that you would like. If you make your game in C#/XNA and you feel that it would have a chance for Imagine Cup I would suggest submitting your entry. Winner of that will get to go to Cairo, Egypt and participate in the internationals and have a chance at winning $25,000

1. 1 Minute of Gameplay (at least)

2. 1 Level (at least)

3. 1 Boss!

4. Teams are allowed and may be as large as you wish.

5. The due date is around March 5th (we will set it in stone within the next week or so)

6. Games will be graded on Mechanics, Design (graphics, game and sound), Fun Factor, and Polish

7. The winners get prizes

8. The judges are Parris and Edgar (they may be bribed (jk))

9. Top 3 will get posted on SJSUGAMEDEV.com!!!

8-bit Challenge (Rules)

We are proud to present our second game challenge of the Fall 2008 Semester hereby to be referred to as the 8-bit challenge. The rules are quite simple and are as follows:

- Games must simply feel asthetically 'retro'
- Must resurrect a classic game genre
- Games may be direct clones, slight upgrades, or variations on original titles during that time period
- Mini Presentation due Thursday, November 13th
- Final Presentation due Tuesday December 2nd
- Projects may be developed for any platform
- Projects may feature newer technologies

Cryptic Studios Comes to the Game Development Club at SJSU (3)

Shannon Posniewski is the director of game programming at Cryptic Studios. At this meeting he is going to speak about the game development process,and his work in the MMORPG realm. Shannon has worked on City of Heroes, City of Villians and is currently working on Cryptic's upcoming titles! This event is open to the public and completely free. Free pizza and drinks! Meeting on Tuesday October 14th, 2008

Next meeting will be in the Student Union (Guadalupe room)7pm, we will be RE-DOING the presentation, in order to get a better recording of them for the website and so people can have a bit more time to do them. We will also be having a guest speaker come in from San Francisco State University and present a 3d RTS flash game that he's creating.

Pong Challenge (Rules)

Pong Competition Information

Create a version or variation on Pong. This could be as simple or as complex as the group wishes; however, time is limited.

People may work in teams to reach the goal. People or teams may use any platform and resources that they wish. Copyrighted art material, not owned by a group member, may not be used. If you have not been able to make it to any of the club meetings, this is a great way to get involved!
The initial due date is used to show a alpha version of your game. You may then refine it for the final due date. The Dev-a-thon is an optional event in which a facility will be provided for your group to meet. If you were not able to make it to the last meeting, and still want to participate let me know and I will put you on a team.

We will be setting up a carpool for the Independent Game Developers Association's (IGDA) Demo Night @ Cogswell Polytechnical College,. Cogswell is located in Sunnyvale (about a 15 minutes drive on 101 north from SJSU).

We will also be talking about the club's first development event! The Pong Development Challenge(hooray!) All details will be covered at the meeting. Board members will also be doing very short presentation on different technology that are available for game development.(Flash, XNA, Gamemake, etc...), in order to give everyone a better idea of what options are there in regards to game development tools.

Albert Chen, over 12 years of video game industry experience with credits in nearly 2 dozen PC and console games. He has worked at EA, Factor 5, The 3DO Company, and LucasArts. Is currently the Professor of Game Design and Development and head of the Game Development Program at Cogswell Polytechnical College.

Paint Flinger

Paint Flinger is a game developed in collaboration with Cogswell Polytechnical College. Edgar Miranda (SJSU) was the project lead and programmer, Jon Hoekstra (Cogswell) was the Art Lead, Kevin Speer (Cogswell) and Joyce Ng (Cogswell) provided character art, and Blake McChristian (Cogswell) designed the menu art.



Paint Flinger is a two player game in which each player must try and fling sheep, cows, and ducks onto the other player's sides, in which the animals will proceed to paint the ground when they collide with it . The player to fling the most animals onto the other player's side wins! Extra points are awarded the further an animal is flung. But be warned, trucks and cars sometimes come down the road which makes it difficult to fling animals to the other side!

Ultimate Online Checkers

Ultimate Online Checkers is a Flash game developed by Edgar Miranda (lead programmer and designer) and many others (see in game credits). It won 7th place in the Mochi Media "Become a Rock Star" Flash Game Contest.


Wow, the checkerboard is blue.

Ultimate Online Checkers is based on the popular board game, but it adds power-ups, such as the ability to purchase a king early in the game.
This polished game features online multiplayer gameplay and original artwork. It is complete and fully playable.
